TEA REVIEW: Teasenz’s Ming Qian Huan Shan Mao Feng and Anji White Bai

Today, I will be trying two green teas from Teasenz: Ming Qian Huang Shan Mao Feng and Anji White Bai. Both teas were picked in spring 2016, have low caffeine levels but from different areas (Anhui and Zhejiang respectively) within China. Please note, when I got the teas last year, the leaves were much more vibrant green, but I was unable to review it until now.

The top leaves are the Huang Shan Mao Feng which are slightly fuzzy and were hand-fried, while the Anji White Bai is more straight and long. The Anji White is not a white tea but named ‘white’ because the tea leaves are whiter than others in the region. After steeping, the leaves look very similar.

 

Ming Qian Huan Shan Mao Feng

Description: “Leaves are picked in early spring, before the Spring Festival, when the buds are still tender and full of flavor.”

Review: The dry leaves of the Huang Shan Mao Feng had a sweet floral aroma. However, when wet, the leaves smelled mossy and pine-like. Tea was very delicate with slight hay flavour. Liquor was pale yellow (3/5 rating).

Anji White Bai

Description: With long, delicate, vivid green leaves, Anji white tea is beautiful in every sense of the word.”

Review: The smell of the  Anji White wet leaves were reminiscent of the grassy smell after a downpour, and was slightly musty and forest-y. Once steeped, the tea had a sweet grassy flavour. After multiple infusions, the liquor stayed a light pale yellow colour (2/5 rating).

Overall

I personally liked the Huan Shan Mao Feng a bit better because I thought the flavours were less grassy and more mellow. However, if you like grassier teas then maybe the Anji White will be the one for you!
