DAVIDsTEA’s Butter Sencha | Tea Review

I normally try not to be swayed by the smell of a tea. However, I fell hook line and sinker for this one. It had a great sweet popcorn buttery fragrance that was mouthwatering!

Description: “This beautifully unique green tea from Japan boasts notes of rich caramelized butter.”

Review: The flat tea leaves were olive and dark emerald green. They were very broken and small. However, they had a rich warm popcorn butter smell. The wet leaves were more yellow-olive and it was evident how broken the leaves were.

The lovely buttery smell disappeared from the wet leaves but was still pronounced in the light yellow-green liquor! When I read the ingredient list, I realized that there was a natural roasted butter flavouring, which is where the smell came from.

However, despite brewing the tea repeatedly, even using a lower steeping temperature, the liquor was still mildly bitter. There was a mild a lingering of butter flavour at the tail end of the sip. The astringency coated the tongue and dried out my mouth. When I let the liquor cool down, it helped with the bitterness but the mild flavour that was left quickly disappeared. I really wanted to enjoy this tea. While it smelled delicious, it sadly didn’t translate into the taste for me (2.5/5 rating).

I've heard both good and bad things about this but I'm still very intrigued to try it. I can't wait to try some davidstea blends next year.

I really gave it my all! It just was always bitter. I did love how it smelled. :(

There is nothing worse than a tea blend that smells amazing but tastes nowhere near as good. It's so disappointing
