I couldn’t think of a more fitting tea then genmaicha considering how at the start of 2018 in February, I was in Japan!

Review: Genmicha, I think, is most likely one of the first Japanese teas I knowingly tried. I remember getting it at Japanese restaurants and wondering what it was because it was so different than the Chinese green or pu’erh teas I was used too.
This one too had the classic smell of most genmaichas I’ve tried in the past, warm, roasted, and a bit earthy. The one big difference I saw in this one was that some of the rice had been popped, which was a nice touch. The liquor had an equally warm roasted smell so, I was very excited to try it!
However, despite brewing this multiple times, the flavour was very faint. The toasted notes appeared quickly and disappeared as quick. While I normally err on the side of caution and steep at the lower recommended temperature (2 minutes), I even tried steeping it again at the higher suggested time (3 minutes) and the flavour was still very weak.
I may try this again using a longer steep time, but since these were the recommendations, I was sadly a bit disappointed because it smelled very delicious (2/5 rating).
