DAVIDsTEA’s Deep Blue Spirulina | Tea Review

I wanted to start the new year with something bright and pretty! This blend with butterfly pea flower fit the bill!

Description: “A revitalizing blend of pineapple, spirulina, moringa and colour changing butterfly pea.”

Instructions: 1-2 Perfect Spoonfuls of tea | 475 ml (16 oz) of 90℃/195℉ water for hot tea or 295 ml (10 oz) for iced | Steep for 3-5 minutes

Review: I am always a fan of the blue colour that butterfly pea flowers add to the liquor after the infusion, so I knew that I had to pick this one up! I also enjoy adding a splash of lemon to change the colour.

The dry blend had a teal tinge and pretty petals. It also had a lemony and very strong tropical smell. Once infused, the liquor was more of a deep indigo colour than a blue colour. It smelled like a mix of herbal and floral, as did the wet infusion.

When the liquor was hot, it was very difficult to discern anything past a vague “lemony” taste. Once cooled, I was able to pick up some sweet berry notes, as well as lemon and tart undertones. The final notes were more floral. I was actually surprised because I had expected a more tropical taste!

To make the liquor change colour, I gave it a good dose of lemon juice, which turned the liquor into a nice bright magenta colour. I find that there is a delicate balance between making the liquor change colour and adding too much lemon juice. To make it this colour, it made the liquor rather sour.

Overall, I liked the blend and its colour changing properties. I can see some people may see this blend leaning a bit tart. The liquor can become overly sour with the addition of lemon juice. I personally enjoyed the blend better without the lemon (3/5 rating).
