Lemon Lily Organic Tea’s Toasted Coconut | Tea Review

In the past, I’ve tried Lemon Lily’s Coconut Ginger and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to try this one!

Description: “Toasted Coconut slices and shredded coconut on a bed of black tea.  It’s delicious, mildly sweet, buttery and toasty.”

Instructions: 1½ teaspoon | 212°F | 4-6 minutes*

Review: At first glance, I really liked the contrast between the dark, almost black, tea leaves and the bright pop of white from the coconut. Based on the ingredient list, this tea has two ingredients: black tea and coconut! The dry blend had a sweet coconut smell. It reminded me of coconut candy with the blend’s nutty toasted and vanilla notes.

Once the water hit the blend, there was a strong coconut smell that wafted up from the cup. After 4 minutes, the wet leaves were chocolate brown and the coconut pieces were a hazelnut colour. At this point, the wet blend smelled more earthy and musky with the coconut very faintly in the background.

Due to the coconut, the dark reddish liquor had an oily film at the top. The liquor itself tasted earthy, coconut, nutty with a hint of briskness at the end. When cooled, the taste was much more mellow with it tasting nutty and the coconut taking a backseat. This blend is like a dessert tea and would pair along well with sweet desserts or breakfast.

I steeped this blend a few times and I found steeping it over 4 minutes made the tea rather strong which cut down the coconut flavour and increased the astringency. The instructions I have listed above is from the Lemon Lily website* compared to the packaging which was slightly different. Overall, I rather enjoyed this one and had it once during lunchtime one time which was nice (3.5/5 rating).

Come to think of it, I don’t recall ever having a coconut blend. 😳 I like coconut in other things, so I imagine I’d like it in a tea blend. And this one does sound like a nice dessert tea.
