JusTea’s Mt. Kenya Black | Tea Review

by Tea in Spoons

Tea provided for review

In the mornings, I find myself normally reaching for a black tea. So, I’m always on the search for a good morning pick-me-up!

Description: “A cup of Mt. Kenya Black transports you to the lush, jade tea gardens at the foot of Mt Kenya.”

Instructions: 1 teaspoon | 205°F | 3 minutes (for a second cup, re-steep 6 minutes)

Review: Kenya is a tea producing region that I am still learning about, therefore, I was excited when JusTea sent me some teas to try! I have met the owners a few times at various tea events and have tried some of their teas over the years. I generally like unfussy teas in the morning, so this tea looked promising!

Right from the start, the dry leaves had a lovely warm, sweet, fruity, and caramel smell. The dark ashy brown leaves were comprised of small and medium sized broken leaves. After infusing for 3 minutes, the broken leaves had unfurled and were a chocolate colour with a green tinge. The wet leaves had an earthy musky smell.

Colour wise, the liquor was a dark golden reddish brown with a woody, damp earthy, and faint sweet smell. It had a strong brisk malt taste with some cocoa and earthy notes. When cooled, the liquor was less brisk and leaned more cocoa, sweet, and earthy.

The website mentioned that the tea could be re-steeped a second time for 6 minutes. The second infusion was the same reddish brown colour and had a woodsy earthy smell. In comparison to the first infusion, the taste was much more mellow with underlying sweet, malt, and woodsy notes.

This was a lovely black tea that reminds me of an English Breakfast Blend. It had an earthy and woody note to it with some sweetness and isn’t overly brisk. This would be nice for someone who doesn’t want an overpowering black tea which can be re-steeped (3.5/5 rating).
