Over the last few months, I’ve slowly been working my way through some of the teas that Doke Tea Estate has to offer! This month is the last tea I will be trying from the farm, a black tea.
Description: “[T]his organic, hand rolled, sun dried black tea from the Doke Tea Garden in Bihar India produces a sweet honey flavour character with very low astringency.”
Instructions: 1 ½ tsp* | 96°C | 3 – 5 minutes
*packaging said 1 teaspoon, but I used 1 ½ teaspoon
Review: The dry wirey leaves were jet black colour with a sweet, fruity, and malt smell. Once the hot water hit the leaves, there was a lovely aroma of burnt caramel and cocoa. The liquor gradually became a dark reddish-brown colour and smelled like baked cherry pie.
The taste was reminiscent of baked bread and cocoa. It was nutty, woody with notes of burnt toffee, sweet potatoes, and malt. When cooled, the liquor had a charcoal and an earthy taste with some dryness at the back of the throat. The wet reddish-brown leaves were long and twisted with a roasted, woody and charcoal smell.
This had such a lovely sweet, malt, and cocoa taste and I really enjoyed it! I found every time I brewed this tea, it had slightly different notes so, it was always a surprise. At times, the sip was more earthy, then other times sweetness enveloped the mouth. Of all the Doke Tea Estate teas I’ve tried, I personally enjoyed this one the best. This is a great sweet black tea and would be lovely in the morning or as an afternoon treat (4.5/5 rating).
