Bird & Blend Tea Co.’s Brighton Rock | Tea Review

Since it is a new year, I wanted to start it with a bang. What shouts “new year” more than a tea blend with star sprinkles!?

Description: “This Oolong tea is made colourful with sprinkles and packs a strong minty flavour!”

Instructions: 1 teaspoon | 80°C | 3 minutes | without milk

Review: I came across this blend while looking for unique blends to try. This is an exclusive tea for one of Bird & Blend Tea Co.’s stores in Brighton. Each store has an individual blend and “is designed to represent the people and the local area,” which is a lovely way to symbolize a store. Despite not having visited the shop (maybe in the future?), this cute blend was too hard to pass up!

The dry blend was festive looking with the yellow star sprinkles, blue pea flowers, and pops of red from the spherical peppercorns. The dry blend has a cooling peppermint smell with a bottom note of sweetness and spices. While the website said this is a nice summer drink, these flavours also worked well in the wintertime.

After brewing for 3 minutes, the liquor became a deep aqua-green/blue colour due to the butterfly pea flower mixing with the oolong and/or mint. It had a very mild minty smell and a dominant peppermint taste with some sweetness. The sip ended with a lingering spiced note at the back of the throat. The oolong taste was difficult to detect and it may be because, at the recommended temperature, a fair portion of the oolong had not fully unfurled. The wet leaves mostly smelled of peppermint.

I had personally gone in expecting a wider range of flavours, especially due to the oolong being the first ingredient, but all I tasted was the peppermint. I was unable to taste the tea, and without knowing the ingredient list, I don’t think I would have identified it. That being said, for anyone who is a fan of peppermint and likes sweeter blends, this is a nice minty brew that turns into a pretty greenish ocean colour (2.5/5 rating).
