In my last order from World Tea House, Phil, the owner, kindly added a surprise tea for me to try: this green tea from Nandi Hills Tea Farm. Nandi Hills is the same farm as the white tea from last week, so I wanted to share them side-by-side!
Description: “This unique whole leaf tea from the Nandi Hills in Kenya brews a fresh sweet cup with notes of seagrass and toasted oats.”
Instructions: 1.5 tsp | 85°C| 3 minutes*
* I noticed after writing my review that the website said this tea could be steeped multiple times but I only infused the tea once.
Review: The twisted and curly ashy green leaves had a mineral, artichoke, and nutty smell. After brewing for 3 minutes, the liquor was a pale yellow colour. The taste was sharp and had a forward vegetal taste with a nutty roasted note. The taste reminded me of Chinese pan-fried green tea like Dragonwell/Longjing. The end of the sip was drying on the tip of the tongue and the back of the throat. When cooled, the taste was less bitting and was reminiscent of spinach and roasted nuts. The wet leaves smelled like fresh cut grass, charcoal and asparagus.
Overall, as a fan of Dragonwell/Longjing, I enjoyed this this tea like I did with the white tea! I did find with either a shorter or longer steep, this tea could be muted or overwhelmingly vegetal. 3 minutes was a good middle ground and recommendation. This tea doe have some astringency but it is not intense. This would be a nice tea for people who want to try a green tea from Kenya or green teas like Dragonwell with a nuttier profile (3.5/5 rating).
