During cold winter months, one thing I love is soup. So, why not combine it all and have a tea that can also be a soup?

Review: When I heard that DAVIDsTEA had come up with a tea that could also be a soup, I rushed out to get it. However, with my hectic schedule, I was only able to get to it recently. Despite this flavour not being available anymore, I still wanted to give it a try.
The dry blend looked much more like a soup base than it did a tea since everything was in small granular bits. It had a nice warm, savoury smell, which was not what I was expecting. Since the blend can be made into a tea and a soup, I wanted to compare the two.
Tea: The instructions didn’t mention anything past straining the mix from the water, therefore, I let it steep for 10 seconds and then removed the blend. The liquor was a dark brown colour and was murky. It smelled very savoury with rosemary and spices.
Flavourwise, it started off sweet but quickly took a spicy turn from the spices and ended savoury like a chicken or beef broth. The liquor made my mouth and tongue tingle. Despite not being very thick, it coated the tongue.
Soup: As a soup, I just mixed the blend into two cups of water. The liquor was thin, and some of the ingredients would sink to the bottom of the bowl and then would require mixing. The smell was very similar to the tea and was savoury like a broth.
What surprised me was that there was a noticeable difference in taste. I didn’t notice the sweetness as much and it was just a quick hit of salt and savouriness. The pepper was also much stronger. That being said, I was able to more clearly pick up the dandelion, rosemary and garlic in the soup.
Overall, I loved the concept of this. However, I’m not sure how much I enjoyed the blend I tried. The main problem for me was that it was overly salty and didn’t have a broth-like consistency as a soup, but also didn’t remind me of tea either. I did notice that DAVIDsTEA has new ones which I would be open to giving a try (2/5 rating)!

You’re a braver soul than I. I love soup, and I love tea, but I think I would prefer to keep the two separate. The idea of soup tea kind of makes me cringe!

Sounds like this would be really good to add to a soup, I personally wouldn’t enjoy it as much as a tea. I tried adding pepper to some tea blends before but never liked the specific spicyness of the pepper. Would much rather have a spice such as ginger
