I became familiar with Nandi Hills Tea Farm in Kenya after trying some tea from the farm in my 2021 World Tea House ADVENTureTea Calendar! I had tasted an oolong and black tea, so I wanted to try other tea types.
Description: “This silver needle type tea, containing only tea buds, brews a smooth delicate cup with notes of sweet corn.”
Instructions: 1.5 tsp | 85°C| 3 minutes*
*The website recommended 85°C but the packaging said 80°C, so I went with the packaging
The white tea was made up entirely of long narrow tea buds. The buds ranged in colour from an ash grey to a tan yellow with a thin layer of slivery tea hairs. The buds had a sweet hay, musky, and honeysuckle smell.
After 3 minutes, the liquor had a pale golden yellow colour and a delicate hay smell. The taste was on the sweet side, with notes of grape/white wine, hay, and honeysuckle, with a nutty finish. The end of the sip was drying at the back of the throat. When the liquor was cooled, the hay and floral flavours were more evident. The wet buds smelled musky and of hay and had a grey-green colour.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this white tea. At times, white teas can be a bit too muted for my preference. This white tea was delicate but flavourful with sweet and fruity notes. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to try a white tea from a different country other than China or enjoys silver needle white teas (4/5 rating).
