DAVIDsTEA’s Hojicha | Tea Review

by Tea in Spoons

The warm notes of a roasted Hojicha always take me back to my time in Japan and smelling this tea being made, therefore I constantly like exploring new ones.

Description: “Toasted & nutty flavours exude a traditionally cozy experience.”

Instructions: 1-2 Perfect Spoonfuls | 475 ml/16 oz | 80℃/175℉

Review: A roast-y aroma filled the air when I opened the pouch of tea. It was made of small brown fragmented leaves and various sized stems. The recommended steeping time was 1 to 2 minutes.

After a short infusion of a minute, the liquor developed into a brown reddish colour with a woody and roasted smell. Despite the distinctive roasted smell from the dry blend and liquor, the taste leaned sweet, with notes of honey and caramel, followed by a woody and roasted taste. When cooled, the roasted note was more evident with dryness at the back of the tongue and throat. The taste lingered in the mouth afterwards.

During another session, I brewed for two minutes, which brought out more of the roasted and woody notes compared to the sweetness from the minute infusion. The stronger roasted taste, however, didn’t lean smokey or charcoal. The wet leaves smelled more roasted than the liquor and reminded me of popped grains and burnt caramel.

This Hojicha had the hallmarks of a classic roasted green tea, with a sweet undertone. I enjoyed that you could bring out a more roasted note that isn’t overwhelming in a relatively short time. I also used this tea to make bubble tea at home which brought out an unexpected grassy note, with an accompanying roasted and nutty profile. This would be a good tea for someone who is new to roasted green teas as this had a more mellow taste, as mentioned on the DAVIDsTEA’s website (3.5/5 rating).

Note: When I was about to post this review, I found out this tea is limited and since was a recent sale, it is currently sold out. However, this tea was in stock for multiple years prior, so hopefully it will come back!
